HIGH SCHOOL SELECTION: PROCEDURES, RULES, CONDITIONS & TERMS

High School Selection in Aeries Parent Portal

 

Current 8th Grade District Students 

 

All District students entering 9th grade have the opportunity to declare which high school they wish to attend in January of 2024 by submitting their high school selection online during the filing period beginning January 1, 2024, and ending on January 31, 2024. Students get to choose between Carlsbad High School and Sage Creek High School. Students wishing to attend Carlsbad Seaside Academy (CSA) will first need to select a home school among the two comprehensive high schools and then make a separate request on the CSA website.  Parents will enter the requested high school in the Aeries Parent Portal. Specific instructions follow below.

 

Current 9th, 10th, and 11th Grade District Students 

Students who are currently enrolled in grades 9, 10, and 11 who wish to remain at the same high school for the 2024/2025 school year, DO NOT need to participate in the selection process. They will automatically be enrolled in their current school for the following year. Only high school students who wish to change schools must declare which high school they wish to attend by submitting their high school selection online during the filing period beginning January 1, 2024, and ending on January 31, 2024. 

Students in 8th and 9th Grade New to District & Private Schools / Living within CUSD Boundaries 

Any student who is not currently enrolled in a CUSD school but lives within the CUSD boundaries, (i.e. currently enrolled in private schools or will be new to the district), must first establish residency and complete enrollment paperwork for the 2023-24 school year. During this process, they will be prompted to declare which high school they wish to attend in the Fall of 2024. They may do this during the High School Selection period from January 1, 2024, through January 31, 2024, or anytime thereafter. Students who move into the District after the High School Selection window has passed may declare a high school choice after establishing residency. However, if the desired school does not have space available, these students may be assigned to the high school with space available.

Changing your High School Selection 

Changes to a student's high school selection may only be made during the open enrollment period by changing your selection in the Parent Portal. Changes after the close of the selection process on January 31, 2024, may not be accepted per Administrative Regulation 5116.1. 

Lottery 

If necessary, a lottery will be conducted using a Random Number Generator for Sage Creek High School on February 16, 2024, with results mailed to students and parents on February 24, 2024. All students participating in a lottery would need to prove residency before their spot is officially reserved. 

Special Education 

Special Education services vary by school site. Please refer to your IEP Team for the most appropriate placement for your child. 

Selection Deadline is Final 

The submitted high school selection is final at midnight on January 31, 2024. Changes may not be permitted after the application deadline per Administrative Regulation 5116.1. 

Late Applications 

Late applicants (filing AFTER January 31st) may not be accepted. Students who have not selected a high school during the High School Selection Window (January 1, 2024 - January 31, 2024) will be assigned a high school determined by the District based on enrollment numbers and capacity.

School Locator

Schools are assigned according to your residential address within our district boundaries. Use our address lookup system to locate the schools serving your address.

Please note: Transitional Kindergarten programs are offered at the following schools: 

Calavera Hills Elementary: For Calavera Hills & Hope students 
                                                         Jefferson Elementary: For Buena Vista, Kelly, Jefferson & Magnolia Students                                                        Poinsettia Elementary: For Aviara Oaks, Pacific Rim & Poinsettia Students 

The only exception to the Assigned Neighborhood Schools policy is for high school students. They choose which high school to attend when they enroll for the first time.  High School students may elect to change schools during a specific Open Enrollment Period each year.

** Please be aware: If you live in the new Mirasol Apartments, there is a bug in our system. It will say your assigned school is  Calavera Hills Elementary however it actually is Hope Elementary. Please take your paperwork to Hope Elementary at 3010 Tamarack Ave, Carlsbad (760-331-5900). Sorry for the inconvenience.**

Open Enrollment/Intradistrict Transfer (School of Choice)

An intradistrict transfer is required for students who want to attend a CUSD school other than their residence school. Students must be pre-enrolled in order to submit this request. Please complete the pre-enrollment process online and contact your residence school for the next steps.
